Music and the Seasons

Hey everyone. I was thinking this morning about something I have discussed during group sessions in the past - how therapeutic music can be, and also how I always associate certain albums with my return to school in the fall. When I first came to K-State as a Freshman, I couldn’t stop listening to Modest Mouse’s Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks.

Right now, I can’t stop listening to The Mountain Goats The Sunset Tree, which is a really beautiful autobiographical album about a man’s experience with childhood abuse.

I’m just curious if other people have this same relationship with music, what albums they might associate with the beginning of school, or what they find especially cathartic or soothing?

Welcome new students.

Hey, new students - Welcome to K-State. You will find everyone friendly and helpful. Ask lots of questions. check out this site. There are tips for freshman and events on campus as well as around campus.

Post Your Procrastination Secrets

University Life Cafe staffed a table at the Student Union today. As finals are approaching, we asked students to post their procrastination secrets. Please add your favorite ways to procrastinate to the list and then check out the study tips on The Bookshelf under “academic skills” to find productive ways to procrastinate. Here’s the list we gathered in the Union: watch movies; take a jog; bake; Xbox 360; sneak off to lunch at K-State; sleep, sleep more, and keep sleeping; hide out in the newsroom; hanging with friends; clean; play with my dog; watch t.v.; Facebook; text; take a lot of naps; studying for tests; watch a movie; ride my bike; eating and sleeping.

Job hunting!

It seems like everyone I know is job hunting right now! It is really stressful. You spend lots of time filling out applications and following up with employers, and then may not even get a call back, much less an interview! Any ideas on how to handle this process and maintain a good attitude?

weddings?

So I am in a friends wedding this summer and I am starting to feel overwhelmed with all the responsibilities. First, it’s really expensive to be in someone’s wedding, but no one ever really mentioned that when they ask you… and maybe I should be honored and excited but I don’t exactly have a job lined up.. any idea how I can be a good friend without going broke?

Also, I am throwing a shower and a bachelorette party. I know there are lots of website to tell me what to do/how these things go, but I guess I am just feeling bogged down by all this extra work on top of school… any thoughts on how I can make this all work and still finish the semester strong?

Academic Anxiety

I’m a freshman here at K-state. I get nervous about academic work all the time. I know that I have a good GPA but am always fretting about it. I’m better about it than I used to be back in High School. But its still there. What can I do to reduce this anxiety? I want to enjoy my classes (which I do), without so much of the stress (which I think some stress is a good thing, but sometimes the level gets a bit too high)

Al Anon / AA

I’m the adult child of two alcoholics, and I’ve tried going to both Al Anon and AA, but have been alienated by the Christian tone of the meetings, but want to meet with others to talk about issues that come up for family members and friends of alcoholics. Does anyone know of any non-Christian oriented places where this is possible? Just wondering.
